(TAP) - The cement will no longer be packed in plastic bags. The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines, on Tuesday evening, announced the repeal of the joint decree issued with the Ministry of Trade that authorised the packaging of cement in plastic bags.

The decree, published last August 14 in the Official Gazette of the Tunisian Republic (JORT), had caused a general outcry on the Web and angered environmental activists and some MPs who went so far as to file a complaint with the Administrative Court to overturn this decision which they described as 'disastrous' for the environment.

The decision was also considered to be in violation of the government decree banning conventional single-use plastic bags, adopted in January 2020.

Tunisia remains the 4th consumer of plastic products per capita in the Mediterranean region, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The Tunisian economy is losing about 20 million dollars each year due to plastic pollution, according to the same source.
